Why Inspections are Important
Termites are the most costly of all the wood destroying organisms, costing millions of dollars in damage every year to property owners. Termites enter structures from the ground mostly through cracks and voids. They will often attack the wood framing and supports our home is built from. Since we can't see the framing of the building, most people are oblivious to termite infestations. Usually, by the time most people see termite damage, a colony has been living and eating in there for some time. Understanding Termite Infestation
There are two types of termites: the subterranean termites and the drywood termites. While drywood termites are common in the South, in the Midwest we pretty much only deal with Subterranean termites. As their name suggests subterranean termites live underground in the soil, but enter the structure to feed. Termites feed on cellulose, which are found in wood, books, boxes, furniture and drywall coverings. Termites build mud tunnels for protection and to maintain moisture in the item they are feeding on. As they feed, they will hollow out the wood that supports the floors, walls and ceiling, which could lead to major damage and thousands of dollars in repairs. A swarm of small winged termites, the presence of mud tubes on the structure, and damaged wood with dirt inside of it are all signs of a termite infestation.
